Key Roles and Responsibilities
Decontamination and Cleaning
- Receive, sort, and decontaminate used surgical instruments and medical equipment.
- Clean instruments manually and using automated washers, ultrasonic cleaners, and other equipment.
- Follow infection prevention and safety protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
Inspection and Assembly
- Inspect instruments for cleanliness, functionality, damage, and completeness.
- Assemble instrument trays, procedure packs, and surgical sets according to established standards.
- Verify that instruments are correctly arranged and ready for use.
Sterilization
- Operate sterilization equipment such as steam autoclaves, low-temperature sterilizers, and other approved systems.
- Select appropriate sterilization methods based on instrument manufacturer instructions.
- Monitor sterilization cycles and document results.
Quality Assurance and Monitoring
- Perform biological, chemical, and mechanical monitoring of sterilization processes.
- Maintain accurate sterilization records and logs.
- Identify and report equipment malfunctions or quality concerns.
Inventory and Supply Management
- Track, organize, and maintain inventory of instruments and sterile supplies.
- Ensure adequate stock levels for surgical and clinical departments.
- Rotate supplies according to expiration dates and facility policies.
Distribution and Case Support
- Deliver sterile instruments and supplies to operating rooms, procedural areas, and patient care units.
- Prepare case carts and specialty trays for scheduled procedures.
- Respond to urgent requests for instruments and equipment.
Compliance and Safety
- Follow standards established by organizations such as the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation and Association of periOperative Registered Nurses.
- Maintain compliance with facility policies, infection control guidelines, and regulatory requirements.
- Participate in quality improvement and continuing education activities.
Sterile Processing Technician
- Decontaminated, inspected, assembled, sterilized, and distributed surgical instruments and medical equipment.
- Operated sterilization equipment and monitored sterilization cycles to ensure compliance with infection control standards.
- Prepared instrument trays, procedure sets, and case carts for surgical and clinical procedures.
- Maintained accurate sterilization records and inventory of sterile supplies.
- Collaborated with operating room and clinical staff to ensure timely availability of instruments and equipment.
- Followed safety, quality assurance, and regulatory guidelines to support patient care and infection prevention.
