Job DescriptionRN Clinical Informaticist GENERAL DUTIES: The Clinical Informaticist role provides a liaison between clinical workflows and information technology in the implementation, optimization and ongoing support of clinical systems involved with the electronic health record (EHR). The Clinical Informaticist is responsible for workflow transformation, assessment, planning, design, redesign, validation, testing, evaluation, end user training, implementation support, optimization, and adoption of clinical applications and processes. Focus is on being the advocate and change agent for hospital leaders and clinicians to ensure maximum benefit of the EHR. Reports to the Director, Clinical Informatics DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC DUTIES: Communication • Works with hospital leadership, department managers, clinicians, and physicians to facilitate problem-solving and ongoing communication. • Assists Information Services with communicating system downtime to end users and serves as resource for activities associated with the downtime. • Provides status updates to the Director, Clinical Informatics regarding end user adoption and sustainment of EHR technology. • Leads and participates in meetings/committees for communication of status updates – i.e. project, adoption, and sustainment. • Effectively communicates changes in standard, practice, or functionality to affected end users. Consistently closes the feedback loop. Training • Performs on-going training for development of super-users. • Ensure training materials are updated to reflect current practice/workflow. • Collaborates with department leadership/clinical managers/educators/education department in the development and provision of new hire (employees and contractors) EHR training. • Identifies and assess on-going end user training needs and participates/provides re-training as needed. • Develops and revises training material/course curricula and facilitates distribution of training material. • Works with corporate to ensure updates are incorporated into training and provided just in time on an ongoing basis. Advocate • Facilitates ongoing EHR/clinical application initiatives while being an advocate for end users (Medical Staff, Nursing, Ancillary, other care providers/hospital staff, patients/family). • Subject Matter Expert on EHR functionality and coordination with clinical workflows. • Recognizes and recommends solutions to improve clinical processes. • Assist with identification, development and revision of policies and procedures related to clinical system workflows and processes. Optimization and Support • Responsible for issue identification, escalation and final resolution. • On-going support and development of super users. • Acts as an Information Technology liaison and provides on-going support to end users (Medical Staff, Nursing, Ancillary, other care providers/hospital staff, patients/family) to ensure clinical application and workflow needs are met. • Functions as a change agent and assists end users (Medical Staff, Nursing, Ancillary, other care providers/hospital staff, patients/family) with identifying cause and solution of EHR application issues/problems. • Manages hospital change request process. Quality/Service • Facilitates the implementation of our clinical information systems and workflow in accordance with our standards. • Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with physicians, clinicians, hospital administrators, ancillary departments and others to ensure that EHR and other clinical initiatives support patient-centered best practices. • Provides interdisciplinary leadership throughout the organizations on all clinical initiatives that support Standards and goals. • Work with clinical departments to evaluate processes and workflows impacted by clinical systems. • Ability to: see the big picture and still focus on the day-to-day details, work on several complex issues at the same time, and work effectively individually and as part of a team. • Ability to consistently meet customer service standards. • Functions as a clinical application subject matter expert and analyzes the EHR's potential impact on current/future state workflows, polices, and procedures. • Preforms workflow analysis, design, redesign, and documentation. Creates current and future state workflows that support the clinical application. • Evaluates clinical workflow for compliance to clinical standards. • Ensures accuracy of data, work, and information. • Attends relevant committee meetings as assigned. • Member of Hospital Committees that pertain to the EHR. Adoption/Sustainment • Ensures appropriate use of the clinical systems by end users. • Strives to continuously improve operations through quality improvement and sustained results. • Evaluate adoption of clinical systems by hospital staff and implement activities to enhance adoption. • Ensures Meaningful Use compliance. Outcomes/Metrics • Assists in monitoring and reporting of outcomes, metrics, Meaningful Use and other quality related data. • Serves as a resource to assist with monitoring and improving system quality initiatives. • Ensures department leadership are knowledgeable in the use of reports for monitoring compliance, quality and performance measures.
QualificationsRequired: • RN with active California RN License. • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing or other Healthcare related filed. • Minimum of 3-5 years clinical and/or informatics background in an acute care setting. • Previous experience with informatics (i.e. super user, testing, trainer). • Excellent communication skill. Must be proficient in the English language (reading, writing, and speaking). • Good understanding of clinical workflows and integration of technology. • Competent user of Microsoft Office products – including Excel and Visio. • Collaborative – works well with others. • Vision – sees the big picture and enjoys bringing that vision to others. • Self – motivated, able to: work independently with minimal supervision, problem solve and multitask. • Work schedule flexibility – training and support may be required on weekends, evenings and night shifts. • Ability to work with diverse groups. • Excellent organizational, presentation, communication, facilitation, and leadership skills. Ability to present the material clearly and with confidence. • Incorporates LEAN methodology into daily practice. Preferred: • Cerner experience highly preferred. • Hospital leadership experience. • Experienced in adult training/education and instructional design of an EHR highly preferred. • Working EHR knowledge (Clinical documentation, Computerized Provider Order Entry, Electronic Medication Administration, Barcode Scanning/Administration).
