JOB OPPORTUNITY – Maintenance and Operations Superintendent
Are you an experienced water or wastewater operations leader with a passion for public service, infrastructure reliability, and team development? Alderwood Water & Wastewater District (AWWD) is seeking a Maintenance & Operations Superintendent to lead and oversee the District’s field operations, ensuring the safe, efficient, and reliable delivery of water distribution and wastewater collection services.
This position is responsible for managing critical infrastructure systems, developing high-performing teams, and ensuring that operational practices align with the District’s long-term service and asset management goals.
About the Role:
As the Maintenance & Operations Superintendent, you will report directly to the M&O Director and provide leadership across the District’s water distribution, wastewater collection, and facilities operations. This role is responsible for overseeing day-to-day operations, ensuring system reliability, and supporting the long-term sustainability of critical infrastructure. The Superintendent may supervise, direct, and mentor up to six (6) managers, including Field Operations Managers, a Wastewater Treatment Plant Manager, and a SCADA/Electrical Manager.
- Leadership & Team Development – Provide strong leadership and direction to operational staff, fostering a positive, safe, and accountable work environment. Motivate teams to achieve shared goals while maintaining high morale and supporting professional growth.
- Operations & Infrastructure Oversight – Manage and oversee the operation and maintenance of water distribution systems, wastewater collection systems, and District facilities. Ensure the reliability and performance of infrastructure including water mains, sewer lines, lift stations, pump stations, reservoirs, tanks, meters, valves, and associated equipment.
- Budgeting & Resource Management – Coordinate the development and administration of the M&O Department budget. Ensure that appropriate staffing, equipment, and resources are available to meet operational and maintenance needs.
- Capital Project Coordination – Collaborate with engineering and capital project teams to ensure infrastructure planning, design, and construction align with long-term maintenance and operational requirements.
- Stakeholder Communication & Representation – Serve as a representative of the District in interactions with community groups, industry organizations, elected officials, and the public. Communicate effectively on operational issues and maintain a high standard of customer service.
Problem Solving & Continuous Improvement – Identify operational challenges and develop practical, innovative solutions. Promote continuous improvement in maintenance practices, system performance, and service delivery.
The Ideal Candidate:
The ideal candidate brings strong technical expertise in water and/or wastewater utility operations and leadership experience, with a strong commitment to public service and an understanding of public administration and financial processes. They are an effective communicator and relationship builder, capable of representing the District in a variety of settings and confidently presenting to both small and large audiences.
They demonstrate sound judgment, adaptability, and the ability to lead within a complex, multi-division environment. This role places a strong emphasis on leadership, and the successful candidate will foster a positive, high-performing culture by supporting employee development and serving as an engaged coach and mentor within a learning organization.
Qualifications:
Any combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the role will be considered.
A typical pathway includes:
Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience supervising and managing the maintenance and operation of water or wastewater systems
A bachelor’s degree is desirable
Must possess and maintain a valid Washington State Driver’s License, Industrial First Aid Card, and the ability to obtain a Water Distribution Manager IV certification and a Wastewater Collections Certification II within one year of appointment
Compensation:
$134,982.56 - $180,904.24 annually
(Pay dependent upon experience and qualifications)
