UH Hilo, College of Arts & Sciences, Social Sciences Division, position number 82009, tenure-track, full
time, general funds, 9-month appointment to begin approximately August 2026 or January 2027,
pending position clearance and availability of funding.
The Department of Administration of Justice at University of Hawaii at Hilo invites applications for the
position of Assistant Professor of Administration of Justice. While the area of specialization is open, we
are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in the area of law enforcement. This is an inresidence
position. The Department of Administration of Justice offers a BA in Administration of Justice
(AJ) that includes a fully online Law Enforcement Cohort Track specifically designed for law enforcement
officers, and the Department also offers a Criminal Justice (CJ) certificate.
This tenure-track position is responsible for teaching a broad range of criminal justice courses
throughout our programs as well as developing new courses in their area of specialization that meet
department needs. Scholarly activities will include conducting research in one’s area of expertise and
disseminating research findings in reputable publication outlets. Beyond teaching and research, the
assistant professor is responsible for mentoring and advising students and providing service to the
department, institution, profession, and community.
Duties: Teach undergraduate courses, including Intro to Administration of Justice, Crime and Society,
Criminal Justice, Criminal Law and Procedure, Policing and Punishment, Research Methodology, and
other upper division AJ courses as needed. Serve on university committees. Engage in scholarly
activities. Provide academic advising to students. Engage in periodic assessment activities. Participate
in department, university, and community service.
Minimum Qualifications: A Ph.D. in Criminology or Criminal Justice or closely related social science
discipline from an accredited university is required at the time of appointment. Demonstrated expertise
in the field of criminal justice. Strong evidence of research productivity in the field of criminal justice, or
clear potential for developing a strong program of research in the field of criminal justice.
Demonstrated excellence in university-level face-to-face and online instruction.
Desirable Qualifications: Documented excellence in teaching courses listed under Duties. Documented
excellence in online instruction in various formats, including synchronous, asynchronous, and Hybrid-
Flexible models. Experience teaching in a multi-cultural setting. Applied experience in law enforcement.
Research focus in the area of law enforcement.
Pay Range: Commensurate with training and experience.
