Description

Faculty for Exercise Science Program and Director of the Human Performance Institute

Olivet College, a liberal arts college in south central Michigan with a long-standing commitment to inclusion and diversity, seeks an assistant professor to work with students and to instruct in our programs in the area of exercise science and serve as a member of the faculty in the Health and Human Performance (HHP) Department. The successful candidate will serve as the director of the college’s Human Performance Institute, the purpose of which is to provide on-campus practical learning and research experiences for students in collaboration with the college’s athletic department.

Position Requirements:  Earned doctorate in exercise science, physical therapy, or related field is required; ABD will be considered. The candidate is required to have demonstrated successful teaching at the undergraduate level and have relevant field experience. A history of collaborative work with other faculty members and experience with research and laboratory expertise in the field is preferred.

This is an Assistant Professor position; however established faculty currently in a tenure track position will be considered for hiring at the rank of associate professor.

Responsibilities:  Full-time faculty members teach 24 credit hours (or the equivalent) over two semesters, with some release time available for scholarship per the faculty member’s scholarship plan.  Successful candidates are expected to teach a broad range of undergraduate courses in exercise science including, but not limited to theories of teaching physical fitness, exercise physiology, biomechanics, cooperative education experiences, and practicums focused on practical or applied performance enhancement. Faculty responsibilities include advising and mentoring students, engaging in scholarly activities, and participating in other service activities in support of the college and its mission.  Candidates must bring the ability to create a positive learning experience for students and a commitment to mentoring undergraduates in a collaborative and diverse environment.

Faculty responsibilities include student advising and mentoring, departmental and college committee participation, program and curriculum development, and other services in support of the college and its mission. Candidates who are passionate about teaching, facilitating, and assessing student learning and mentoring undergraduates in a collaborative environment are strongly encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities include directing two health and human performance laboratories (including the institute), oversight of student experiences related to their academic programs within the labs and other experiences, and providing support and guidance regarding methodology for students and colleagues conducting research and laboratory experiments within the department.  Release time from teaching will be provided for these duties.  Direct reports may include strength and conditioning coaches and others supervising student co-ops and practicums.

Departmental Overview:  The mission of the health and human performance department, driven by the Olivet Plan, Olivet College Compact, and vision statement, is to educate the whole of the individual—mind, body, and spirit.  Majors and minors prepare students for a wide variety of professional careers and graduate schools through effective pedagogical practices, internships or field experiences which are an integral part of the learning experience.  The department serves one of the largest and most diverse student populations at the college, many of whom are also student-athletes.

Starting Date:  August 1, 2022.  Review of applications will begin immediately and continue as needed.
