Two Positions Available — Start Dates: July 2026 and July 2027
This one-year Structural Heart Disease Fellowship offers advanced training in complex structural heart disease decision-making and interventions to exceptional candidates who have successfully completed formal training in interventional cardiology. The program is based at Oregon Health & Science University Hospital, a tertiary referral center serving patients throughout Oregon and Southwest Washington. The institution features state-of-the-art facilities dedicated to both coronary and structural heart disease interventions.
The appointee will provide clinical and academic services as assigned by the supervising faculty, in alignment with the university’s missions of excellence in patient care, education, research, outreach, and public service.
Duties and Responsibilities:
As a member of the Knight Cardiovascular Institute, you will report to the Program Director and the Department Chief and will assume responsibility for the duties outlined below.
Education: Fully engage in the post-graduate Structural Heart Disease Fellowship, acquiring the skills necessary to achieve proficiency and clinical excellence in the care of patients with complex valvular heart disease. Fellows will cultivate a comprehensive understanding of the underlying pathophysiology and the evidence base guiding contemporary management, while actively participating in clinical and/or basic science research to advance the collective knowledge of complex valvular conditions. In addition to these core competencies, fellows will develop expertise in the following areas:
Trans-catheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) with Edwards (SAPIEN 3), Medtronic (Evolut Pro) and Boston Scientific (Lotus Edge) trans-catheter valves
Aortic valvuloplasty
Trans-catheter mitral valve repair (Mitraclip)
Trans-catheter balloon mitral valvuloplasty
Trans-septal puncture and intracardiac echocardiography
Exposure to Left atrial appendage closure (Watchman)
Pulmonary artery sensor implantation (CardioMEMS)
PFO/ASD/PDA closure (Cardioform, Amplatzer)
Para-valvular leak closure
Alcohol septal ablation for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
Ongoing advanced coronary work (chronic total occlusion, multivessel disease, atherectomy, etc.)
Advanced LV support (Balloon pump, Impella, ECMO)
Exposure to cutting edge EFS and Pivotal clinical trials in the field of SHD
The Structural Heart Disease fellow will be expected to publish a minimum of two case reports or preferably original research manuscripts in the field of structural intervention or invasive hemodynamic assessment in collaboration with an attending cardiologist. A variety of ongoing research projects are currently available. The SHD fellow will gain competence in CT image analysis for TAVR planning as well as DICOM-based image sharing for research and clinical purposes.
OHSU is a teaching facility and you will be expected to teach medical students and residents in the clinical setting as well as through assigned lectures to be given during the course of the year. You will receive your teaching assignments from the Program Director &/or the Chairman.
Clinic: The Program Director will oversee and assign your clinical schedule. You will serve in the role of Instructor within the department, with your clinical responsibilities structured in alignment with resident and medical student schedules, as well as the specific procedures and assignments associated with those rotations.
Administration: Administrative and other duties may be assigned based on department needs and your area of expertise and interest.
Requirements
Prerequisite training/selection criteria:
Successful completion of three years of general cardiology fellowship training, followed by one year of interventional cardiology fellowship in a program accredited by the ACGME.
Graduates of medical schools outside the U.S. must meet the following:
Have a valid certificate from the Education Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates
Must be eligible to work in the U.S.
Completion of three years three years of general cardiology fellowship plus one year of interventional cardiology fellowship.
Be able to meet licensure requirements of the Oregon Medical Board, and
The candidate shall have three letters of recommendation (one from the candidate’s Interventional Cardiology Fellowship Program Director).
