The Mass Spectrometry Center in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences in the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy is searching for creative, motivated, and disciplined candidates to fill the positions related to LC-MS/MS-based metabolomic, small molecule, and lipid analyses.

An experienced Research Scientist is desired; multiple positions at a variety of levels are available.  Positions have the possibility of long-term appointments and advancement.

Position objectives

  • The candidate will execute duties related to metabolomics/lipidomics analyses offered by the School of Pharmacy Mass Spectrometry Center.
  • The candidate is expected to contribute technical leadership in the area of metabolomics/lipidomics and related mass spectrometry and analytical topics.
  • Candidate will perform independent and collaborative research. Research toward technological developments in metabolomics/lipidomics will be strongly encouraged.
  • This position is responsible for ensuring design, development, documentation and implementation of research procedures and protocols using a variety of complex activities.
  • Candidate will perform research activities such as, but not limited to: metabolomics, lipidomics, LC-MS/MS-based approaches, quantitative techniques; data analysis and informatics for mass spectrometry-based data, development of new mass spectrometry-based methods and experimental designs. 
  • Hands on experience with instrumentation, both operation and basic maintenance, required
  • Experience with LC-MS/MS-based lipidomics and metabolomics experimentation and associated data analysis is desired.
  • Experience with targeted metabolomics panels (e.g., Biocrates) a plus.
  • The position includes the expectation that the candidate would participate in activities pertaining to MS Center operations.
  • The candidate will perform and/or participate in the preparation of manuscripts, reports, presentations as well as the development and execution of SOPs
  • Strong history of demonstrated research success working both independently and as part of a team, preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal communication is required.

The UMB School of Pharmacy Mass Spectrometry Center is an Organized Research Center that hosts 20 state-of-the-art mass spectrometers and has expertise in metabolomics, lipidomics, proteomics, drug analysis, protein structure, and mass spectrometry imaging with an emphasis on collaborative research.

Multiple possible job ranks are available for these positions. Qualifications for each rank is as follows:

EDUCATION:  PhD level scientists preferred with postdoctoral experience. Strong history of demonstrated research success working both independently and as part of a team preferred. *MS and BS level scientists with experience would also be welcome based upon consideration of a unique combination of education and experience. *All ranks require experience in mass spectrometry. Stated experience ranges are guidelines where rank would be determined by each candidate’s education and experience.  Salary will be commensurate with experience.


EXPERIENCE: Applicants should have a Ph.D. degree in Chemistry or a related field of study with 0-5 yrs of experience past Ph.D. degree conferral


EXPERIENCE: Three (3) years of experience including two (2) years in Metabolomics


EXPERIENCE: Five (5) years of experience of laboratory research including three (3) years in the Metabolomics.

SUPERVISORY EXPERIENCE: One (1) year of direct supervision or responsibility for training, work coordination, and monitoring the work of others.


EXPERIENCE: Six (6) years of experience in laboratory research including four (4) years in Metabolomics. 

SUPERVISORY EXPERIENCE: Two (2) years of direct supervision or responsibility for training, work coordination, and monitoring the work of others.
