The TCU and UNTHSC School of Medicine is seeking an experienced leader and innovator in clinical learning for the position of Director for the Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship (LIC). Under the direction of the Assistant Dean of Curriculum, the Director for the LIC will lead and manage the four-year LIC curriculum in Phase 1, 2, and 3 of the TCU and UNTHSC School of Medicine Curriculum. The LIC is an innovative model of clinical education that places medical students in eight core clinical disciplines in both ambulatory and inpatient settings over time, promotes longitudinal experiences with respect to patient care as well as faculty-learner relationships and mentoring, and where students follow a panel of continuity patients. It also integrates clinical training across the entire four-year curriculum.

This position has collaborative oversight of the Phase 1, 2, and 3 LIC Course and Clerkship Directors. This position requires the ability to lead and coordinate the efforts of a diverse team of school of medicine educators, preceptors, and support staff and develop effective relationships with external stakeholders and clinical training sites. The position requires flexible work hours and the ability to work autonomously.


Duties and Essential Job Functions:

  • Work closely with the administration and faculty to develop, deliver, and evaluate a comprehensive four-year LIC curriculum, ensuring that the educational and clinical experiences meet departmental and medical school learning objectives so that each student can achieve appropriate core competencies;
  • Supervise course directors for the Introduction to LIC course in Phase 1, the Transition to LIC in Phase 2, and the Longitudinal Patient Course in Phase 3;
  • Collaboratively lead the recruitment, development, and retention of preceptors for all aspects of the LIC;
  • Provide oversight for necessary contracting with preceptors and preceptor practices;
  • Provide collaborative oversight and direction regarding LIC curriculum activities to the Clerkship Directors, Phase 1 LIC director, and Phase 3 LIC director.
  • Work collaboratively with the Phase 1, 2, and 3 LIC Course and Clerkship Directors to develop, organize, deliver, and evaluate the LIC curriculum;
  • Ensure all curriculum materials for the LIC are submitted by the clinical faculty in a timely fashion;
  • Administer the LIC experience for students, including oversight of all weekly scheduled activities;
  • Collaborate with faculty and leadership to contribute to LIC-related student learning activities in other courses in the curriculum;
  • Arrange for student training in the use of the school of medicine curriculum and evaluation software for tracking patient encounters and procedures, evaluations and assessments;
  • Arrange for student training in the use of electronic medical records;
  • Work closely with the Assistant Dean for Assessment and Evaluation to develop reports related to the LIC;
  • Support faculty development activities for the delivery of the LIC curriculum;
  • Encourage and support diversity by creating an environment of professionalism, respect, tolerance, and acceptance;
  • Attend appropriate committee meetings;
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Education and Experience:

  • MD degree
  • Board-certified in an ABMS recognized specialty
  • Eligible for medical licensure in Texas
  • 5 plus years administrative experience
  • Experience working with medical students from diverse backgrounds
  • Supervisory and performance management experience
  • Qualify for academic rank (Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Professor) in a School of Medicine academic department

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Experience with management of Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship program
  • Evidence of scholarly activity in medical education

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of clinical and workplace-based learning
  • Knowledge of assessment, curricular planning, and quality improvement in education
  • Knowledge of grant writing
  • Ability to communicate and delegate effectively with a broad array of stakeholders
  • Ability in performance management

Proven ability to multi-task in a confidential and fast-paced environment, managing multiple projects and assignments simultaneously

Physical Requirements (With or Without Accommodations):

  • Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms, and other printed materials and information.
  • Able to speak (enunciate) clearly in conversation and general communication
  • Hearing ability for verbal communication/conversation/responses via telephone, telephone systems, and face-to-face interactions
  • Manual dexterity for typing, writing, standing and reaching, flexibility, body movement for bending, crouching, walking, kneeling, and prolonged sitting
  • Lifting and moving objects and equipment up to 10 lbs
