Description

The National Board of Public Health Examiners is the certification body for public health whose mission is to professionalize the field of public health through certification. NBPHE is seeking a Public Member to serve as a voting member of the NBPHE Board of Directors.  The Public Member will  bring a public perspective into all NBPHE board deliberations. The public member will ensures that NBPHE’s decisions maintain a balance between advancing the profession and protecting the public’s interest.

Key Responsibilities

• Participate fully in all board meetings as a voting member
• Provide insight that reflects the needs, expectations, and values of the public
• Review policies, certification standards, and strategic initiatives with attention to transparency, fairness, and public protection
• Represent the public’s viewpoint independently—not as a representative of a particular employer, profession, or stakeholder group

Requirements

Candidates may bring experience such as:

• Public service, community engagement, advocacy, or consumer protection
• Participation on nonprofit, community, or professional boards
• Familiarity with issues of health equity, access, or public accountability
• Understanding of credentialing, quality assurance, or program evaluation
• Professional background in areas such as law, development or communications

Prerequisites for Appointment

• Must not hold a public health degree or public health certification
• Must not be currently practicing or retired as a public health professional
• Must be willing to serve independently of any employer or external interest
• Must commit to the expected time and engagement requirements
