Job Summary:
The medical physicist at Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth) provides all reasonable aspects of medical physics support to radiation therapy as a scientific and technical expert for the department. The physicist assures safe, effective and accurate delivery of radiation to achieve desirable therapeutic results as prescribed by the radiation oncologist by applying AAPM, ASTRO and ACR recommendations. They must produce clear, appropriate documentation and communication to ensure high-quality patient care. This position maintains all applicable regulatory compliance and participates as needed in radiation safety efforts for the department and the health system. The physicist participates in continuing education to stay abreast of progressive quality control methods, patient treatment techniques and department management techniques. This position does not directly manage any other caregivers.
Responsibilities:
- Provides all medical physics services and related functions for radiation therapy services.
- Maintains the technical quality, calibration, and accuracy of radiation treatment equipment and hardware, including but not limited to all linear accelerators, on-board imaging systems, CT simulators, HDR brachytherapy and all supporting quality-assurance equipment.
- Researches methods and techniques that enhance the precision and outcomes of radiation treatments.
- Develops education plans and disseminates this information to caregivers.
- Provides education to medical students, residents and fellows who rotate through the department.
- Provides specific patient services such as special physics consultations, special dosimetry consultations, and computerized treatment planning as needed.
- Supports departmental development initiatives such as participation in clinical trials and student education opportunities.
- Assists in patient-care procedures as requested by the radiation oncologists.
- Submits timely and accurate physics charges and assists as needed in facilitating both internal and external billing inquiries.
- Maintains familiarity with job-relevant CMS guidance.
- Performs routine activities, including machine calibrations, equipment QA, treatment planning, dosimetry measurements and calculations, brachytherapy and radiation safety.
- Maintain proper records and correspondence pertaining to quality control and quality assurance, calibration, radiation safety and compliance with state and federal regulations and standards of accrediting bodies.
- Provides appropriate oversight as custodian of radioactive materials in radiation oncology.
- Serves as a member of or provides reports to the Radiation Safety Committee as necessary.
- Assists with maintenance of department accreditation.
- Identifies new projects and, with supervisor approval, carries them out to completion.
- Actively supports and participates in the research activities of the department.
Qualifications/Requirements:
Experience:
At least three years of working clinical radiation oncology physics experience is required for the staff medical physicist.
Education:
M.S. or Ph.D. in physics, medical physics or a related field and If the candidate holds a Ph.D. in basic physics or a related field, then the candidate should have either completed a postdoctoral fellowship/traineeship in medical physics or graduated from an accredited program conferring an M.S. in medical physics.
Licenses/Certifications:
- New York State medical physics license or limited permit from the Department of Education.
- If hired with a limited permit, a license must be obtained within two years of hire.
