Palm Beach County’s Parks and Recreation Department seeks experienced candidates for its Museum Director of Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens.
The ideal candidate will provide strong institutional leadership, work collaboratively with the Board of County Commissioners, and plan, organize, and direct all museum operations. This position shares responsibility for policy development, ensures adherence to professional museum practices, and fosters a cooperative and productive relationship between Palm Beach County and Morikami, Inc. Under the direction of the County, the Director will oversee daily operations and financial management of the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens, as well as Morikami, Inc. Responsibilities include developing short-, mid-, and long-range goals and objectives and establishing performance measures to assess progress and outcomes. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Director of Special Facilities and is evaluated based on operational efficiency, compliance with established policies and objectives, and overall results achieved.
Palm Beach County is a thriving, culturally diverse community renowned for its outstanding recreational amenities and strong business climate. For more than 40 years, the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens has served as a premier center for Japanese art and culture in South Florida. This well-funded institution features three exhibition galleries, a 225-seat theater, a traditional tea house, 16 acres of meticulously curated gardens, an extensive bonsai collection, a café, a museum store, and a permanent collection of more than 7,000 Japanese art objects and artifacts. The museum welcomes over 200,000 visitors annually and is supported by both County operations and an active nonprofit partner, Morikami, Inc.
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS
This position requires qualified applicants to possess one of the following:
A Bachelor’s Degree in Art, Social Sciences, Museum Studies, Business Administration, or related field; minimum of five (5) years of responsible supervisory experience planning and directing the operations of a museum, historical site or a facility-based operation,
OR
An unrelated Bachelor’s Degree; minimum of seven (7) years of responsible supervisory experience planning and directing the operations of a museum, historical site or a facility-based operation,
OR
An Associate’s Degree in Art, Social Sciences, Museum Studies or Business, or related field; minimum of seven (7) years of responsible supervisory experience planning and directing the operations of a museum, historical site or a facility-based operation,
OR
Graduation from high school or an equivalent recognized certification; minimum of nine (9) years of responsible supervisory experience planning and directing the operations of a museum, historical site or a facility-based operation.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Preferred qualifications include:
Master’s Degree in Museum Science, Japanese Studies, or Asian Studies,
Professional or curatorial experience in Japanese history, language and culture,
Experience in the administration or management of an AAM-accredited museum,
Experience managing a museum operation of 50 or more employees, and
Experience managing a museum budget of at least $3 million annually.
