Description

Since 1990, The Shannon Point Marine Center (SPMC) has administered an annual NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program in marine science. Each summer, eight selected students spent nine weeks at SPMC conducting original research with a faculty adviser, participating in professional development activities, and engaging in outreach events. At the end of the session, students produce a written and an oral report based on the results of their research. Student research projects have included work on estuarine dynamics, emphasizing primary and secondary productivity, biogeochemistry, microbial ecology, sediment and nutrient transport at estuarine and boundary-layer scales, ocean acidification, chemical ecology, and marine diseases.
