The Division of Cardiac Surgery in the Department of Surgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA invites applications for a full-time position as a clinical instructor in the Adult ECMO and Mechanical Circulatory Support Program.
UCLA Health operates one of the highest-volume ECMO programs internationally, with a diverse case mix encompassing venoarterial ECMO for cardiogenic shock, venovenous ECMO for refractory respiratory failure, and extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR). The program is embedded within a quaternary cardiac surgery center that includes cardiac transplantation, advanced heart failure management, and complex aortic surgery, and maintains an active clinical research infrastructure.
Clinical Responsibilities

- Provide clinical care for patients on VA-ECMO, VV-ECMO, and ECPR protocols in collaboration with cardiac surgery, advanced heart failure cardiology, and critical care teams
- Participate in emergent and elective cannulation procedures
- Manage ECMO circuits, anticoagulation, and weaning strategies across multidisciplinary teams
- Participate in cardiac surgical cases
- Support expansion of ECMO outreach and retrieval capabilities across the UCLA Health system
Academic Responsibilities

- Teach cardiothoracic surgery residents and medical students
- Contribute to peer-reviewed publications and national conference presentations in the arena of ECMO harnessing the resources within the Cardiovascular Outcomes Research Laboratories (CORELAB) at UCLA
- Participate in quality improvement and program development initiatives
- Engage with the division's outcomes research program through national and institutional datasets
Qualifications

- M.D. or D.O. with enrolled in an accredited general surgery training program PGY-3 or above; or completed a general/cardiothoracic residency training program
- Board eligibility or certification in the relevant specialty required
- Prior ECMO cannulation experience and familiarity with ELSO guidelines strongly preferred
- Demonstrated commitment to academic medicine and scholarly productivity expected California medical license or eligibility to obtain one required
