Description

Coordinate with senior management to ensure objectives are met through proper tax planning and strategic guidance. Responsible for the day-to-day operation of the tax department to ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local tax regulations. Direct and ensure staff meets compliance requirements and goals of the department. Assist CFO in developing and implementing the strategic direction of the department.
RESPONSIBILITIES (Specific areas of responsibility include but are not limited to):
Perform an active role in the development of the strategic planning initiative of the company with respect to both tax and financial planning.
Coordinate company goals and mission with the priorities of the finance department.
Integrate the initiatives of finance with other departments within the organization.
Review and oversee accounting for income taxes (SFAS 109) including financial statement disclosures.
Oversee preparation and timely filing of multi-state sales and use tax, property tax, income tax and Not-for-Profit tax returns (e.g., 990, 990-T) for both headquarters and section offices.
Monitor legislative and statutory changes that affect tax policy for the Association and its subsidiaries. Recommend alternative courses of action when necessary.
Research complex tax issues and transactions; formulate opinions to management for use by senior management to guide company initiatives. Seek second opinions or advice from outside counsel where applicable.
Review contracts and other legal documents to provide tax opinions on specific business initiatives, including new ventures.
Manage and direct staff to enable them to gain or maintain knowledge necessary to perform their duties.
Provide guidance and support to the internal audit team with respect to finance and tax law for exempt and non-exempt entities.
Encourage career growth among the staff by helping to develop career planning objectives and opportunities for technical advancement.
Ensure appropriate internal controls are in place over accounting for income taxes.
Provide guidance on all tax related audits—federal, state, and local, for income, franchise, sales, or property tax.
Gather, review, and draft correspondence to respond to notices and requests from various government agencies.
Engage external resources and coordinate transfer pricing and management fee arrangements.
Use historical data as well as known business directives to determine projected tax expenses for budget and forecasts.
Use knowledge of the tax area to help CFO and other Sr. Management to develop budgets and other forward-looking projections as it relates to tax.
Ad Hoc requests as determined by the Chief Executive Officer and other members of senior management.
Responsible for preparation and oversight of the Tax Department budget and for monitoring results, including but not limited to: tax project staffing, RFPs for third party tax research, use of tax software, training for staff, and other areas as needed.

SUPERVISION:
This is a supervisory position responsible for the performance management and hiring of employees within the department.
FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY:
Responsible for preparation and oversight of the Department budget and for monitoring results.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's Degree in Business, Accounting, Finance or related field. Masters' degree and CPA preferred.
Ten years corporate or public tax experience in a multi-functional organization.
Prior experience using tax research software, CCH or RIA.
Workday experience preferred.
Four years team management experience.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Must have a thorough knowledge of accounting principles, procedures and systems with a solid understanding of a variety of tax disciplines, including sales, property, income and not-for-profit. Ability to supervise a small tax team, coordinate deadlines, and provide training where needed. Skills in Google Workspace and Microsoft Office Suite, with an emphasis in Sheets and Excel. Basic fluency in artificial intelligence (AI) tools and concepts. This includes using AI to enhance business operations and drive innovation, enabling us to better serve our Members and stakeholders.
Ability to travel up to 15%
