Description
The Hun School of Princeton | Director of Human Resources
Princeton, New Jersey
The Hun School of Princeton, a vibrant, growth-oriented independent day and boarding school serving approximately 350 employees, including 190 full-time employees, 45 regular part-time employees, and 115 seasonal employees, seeks a highly experienced, strategic, and community-oriented leader to serve as its next Director of Human Resources. This is a pivotal moment for the School: after years of enrollment and staffing growth, Hun is poised to elevate its human resources function from a primarily operational model to one that is proactive, strategic, and deeply engaged with the faculty and staff experience.
Reporting to the Chief Financial and Operations Officer, the Director of Human Resources will serve as the School’s senior-most HR leader, responsible for shaping and executing a comprehensive human capital strategy that supports Hun’s mission, strengthens its culture, and ensures organizational excellence. The successful candidate will bring the judgment, credibility, and initiative to operate as a trusted advisor to senior leadership while also serving as a visible, accessible, and highly effective presence across campus.
Hun’s HR function is at an inflection point. Historically, the department has successfully managed essential HR operations within an increasingly complex New Jersey regulatory environment. As the School has grown, there is a compelling opportunity to further elevate critical strategic priorities—such as employee engagement, leadership development, compensation philosophy, and benefits strategy—and invest in them with greater focus and intentionality.
This is a rare opportunity to shape the future of human resources at a respected and innovative independent school. The next Director will build and elevate systems, ensuring that Hun’s people practices fully reflect the strength and ambition of the institution.
The School seeks a leader who is ready to step in, take ownership, and drive meaningful, lasting impact from the outset. The next Director will have a rare opportunity to build and lead a more modern, forward-looking HR function. This includes:
- Shifting the focus from reactive process management to proactive strategic leadership
- Serving as the primary voice and face of HR across the institution
- Partnering closely with academic and administrative leaders to strengthen management practices and professional development
- Bringing a fresh, analytical lens to compensation, benefits, and organizational design
- Assessing and evolving the structure and roles of the HR team itself
This is an ideal role for a seasoned HR executive who is energized by both building systems and engaging people, and who is ready to step into a role with immediate impact and long-term influence.
The Director of Human Resources will join a community that is deeply relational, mission-driven, and committed to excellence. The HR team includes a highly experienced Payroll & Benefits Coordinator with deep institutional knowledge and an HR Operations Manager known for exceptional service and care for employees. Together, this team provides a strong operational foundation upon which the next Director can build.
At the same time, the School is seeking a leader who will redefine how HR shows up across campus—elevating its visibility, strengthening its voice, and expanding its strategic impact. The successful candidate will be someone who embraces both the complexity and the opportunity of this environment.
Salary range: $170,000–$190,000, commensurate with experience. A generous benefits package includes tuition remission and four weeks of vacation plus one week during each of the winter and spring breaks, plus approximately fifteen school holidays.
