Description
The Miami Symphony Orchestra (MISO) invites emerging conductors to apply for the position of Assistant Conductor. The successful applicant will work with the Miami Symphony Music Director & CEO Maestro Eduardo Marturet, observing rehearsals, acting as a potential cover conductor, and conducting the MISO’s Educational and Outreach activities whenever needed.

This position is a 1-year appointment with the option for a 2-year extension
Duties and Responsibilities
The primary roles of the Assistant Conductor are as follows:
Cover (understudy) rehearsals and all concerts; be present at all rehearsals and assist with balances and other matters that may arise; provide the Music Director with written and verbal feedback on artistic matters relating to repertory (balance, intonation, dynamics, ensemble issues, etc.); being fully prepared to conduct in the event of emergencies; conduct performances as assigned by the Music Director; lead sectional rehearsals; assist the Music Director and Artistic Committee in preparation of season programs, rehearsal schedule, and other administrative and musical responsibilities.
Additionally, the Assistant Conductor will be required to attend all staff and production meetings, assist in the communication of the Music Director’s needs, and work with the Production team on fulfilling the artistic requirements for any given production (running supertitles or other visual elements that require score reading). Other tasks include meeting with the production team regarding stage set-up preferences, working with the library team to review and confirm bowing, edits, and cuts. The Assistant Conductor is expected to be on time at all services and available for meetings with staff outside of orchestral service times. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements
Requirements
1 A Master’s degree in orchestral conducting or equivalent experience. Minimum 3 years equivalent experience required.
2 A broad knowledge of orchestral repertoire, conducting techniques, orchestration and instrumentation, and a desire to conduct a variety of concerts including classical, pops, family and educational programs.
3 Ability to work flexible hours including, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
4 Exceptional oral communication skills.
5 Fluency in English and Spanish is required.
6 Music Production knowledge required
7 Candidate must live in the Miami, Florida area.
The Assistant Conductor must have extensive conducting and administrative experience. The ideal candidate must be able to handle organizational and communication aspects of the position in a positive, professional, and timely manner. Must work well under pressure and be willing to take directions and requests from many people while being able to prioritize tasks. Candidates for the MISO Assistant Conductor position must be flexible and willing to be available to help, maintaining patience and a positive attitude amidst a sometimes hectic and always busy concert season. Above all, must have a positive attitude and be a team player.
The purpose of this position is to support the applicant in developing his conducting experience and career. In addition, and since MISO is the official representative of El Sistema in South Florida, the applicant is expected to work together with our educational team in support of the Youth Symphony Orchestra for the City of Miami in partnership with different schools in South Florida.
The applicant must also be an experienced professional musician.
